Dirty Genes: A Breakthrough Program to Treat the Root Cause of Illness and Optimize Your Health

Book Review by Leo Trevino

“There’s nothing I can do about it, its in my genes.” How many times have we heard this before? Or how many times have we said this to ourselves!? But is there scientific evidence out there that we can do something about it…evidence that may suggest we can clean this genes up?!

According to Dr Ben Lynch and his new book, Dirty Genes: A Breakthrough Program to Treat the Root Cause of Illness and Optimize Your Health, we can not only clean up our genes, but also keep the dirty ones (aka those we are born with) from ever making an impact! A leading researcher in epigenetics and gene expression, Dr. Lynch gives us the tools and knowledge to make the best of our genes, no matter how “bad,” or dirty, they may be.

Here are my key takeaways…

  • There are about 20,000 genes in the body and more than 10 million known “genetic variations.” As many as 40,000 are known to potentially alter genetic function. Genetic variations are the so-called “genes you are born with.”
  • Dirty genes focus on what Dr. Lynch calls the “Super Seven.” These seven genes play a role in altering and manipulation many other genes.
  • Some genes may “act” like they have a genetic variation, however because of nutrition and lifestyle, the gene is more classified as a “genetic expression.” In other words, you weren’t born with this gene being “dirty” life a genetic variation; instead your lifestyle make the gene express themselves as being dirty.
  • A process know as methylation plays a key role in genetic expression and 85% of this chemical process occurs in the liver.
  • Folate, or B9 and magnesium are essential for a healthy methylation cycle. Folic acid, and additive in many foods, has found to be ineffective at providing folate for the methylation cycle. On top of that, 50% of Americans are deficient in magnesium. These can both be remedied with dark leafy greens in diet.
  • The clean gene protocol is very neat and effective. It provides a list of side effects you may be experiencing to help you tune in to which of the “Super Seven” genes is giving you the most trouble and needs to be cleaned up. Dr. Lynch lays out a 2 week plan along with a “spot clean” for an additional two weeks.

Great read for all of us looking to get a better understanding of how are genes play a role in our overall health. Plenty of tips and great advice to help you along, plus recipes as well to help with overall cleaning of all the genes, or spot cleaning of certain one.

Don’t let the dreaded fate of “well my parents gave it to me, and its in my genes” excuse prevent you from taking more control of your health and letting your genes work for you, and not against you; no matter how “dirty” they may be! Very interesting book with plenty of details to keep you reading. Get one for your collection!
